The following ARE themes of memento mundi, and will occasionally feature as part of the game. They will not necessarily feature as part of every game, and if you would have an issue with one of these, please contact the larp organiser to discuss if suitable arrangements can be made. Themes described as major or common themes can be expected to appear in most if not all games, other themes will occur more rarely.
Discrimination on the basis of nationality, religion or faith - One of the main drivers of the setting is nationalism, and discrimination based on IC nation is common. The setting also contains themes of religious intolerance, again directed at in character religions.
Extreme violence - Violence is a major theme of the game, and will occur in most encounters.
Extreme gore - Rarely phys-repped, but often described. This can include descriptions of the aftermath of violence and war, repercussions of inadvisable magic, and many other sources.
Self-harm - Commonly as a route to arcane power. Other types of self harm are not a major theme of the game, but may be explored in game.
Torture - As a method of arcane control and manipulation. Torture outside of magic is exceptionally rare.
Consensual sexual contact - This is not a major theme of the game and roleplay should not exceed what is appropriate in a public space. More graphic scenes may well be described.
Eating disorders - Fantasy-styled eating disorders are a theme associated with one of the magics. Other types of eating disorder are not a major theme of the game, but may be explored in game.
Slavery, Mind Control, or other means of removing agency - While slavery itself is relatively uncommon in the game, people’s attempts to dominate others (through physical power, mental domination, or political manoeuvring) are major themes, which can result in both metaphorical and literal slavery.
Miscarriage and stillbirth - While these themes are uncommon, they may be explored as part of the setting.
Forced abortion - While this theme is uncommon, it may be explored as part of the setting.
Domestic Abuse - Long term domestic abuse is not a theme of Memento Mundi, and should not be included within stories. However, most of the stories of Memento Mundi deal with forms of violence and vying for control, and these situation can arise within a family as easily as as any other group. If these sort of elements are introduced they should be specific to a situation or objective, not be indicitive of a long-term power imbalance, and ideally avoid traditional real-world power imbalances. Basically a father beating his wife and children to keep them in line is out, a daughter who is a cultist of the Traitor and emotionally manipulates her parents into killing for her to prove their love is in.
Genital Mutilation - Genital Mutilation as something which is forced upon another without their consent is not a theme of Memento Mundi, and should not be introduced within stories. Genital Mutilation as a personal choice, both for arcane power or other reasons, is rare but something which does exist within the setting.
