The Rosemile family is a minor noble family of Acryn with records going back through just seven generations, tracing back to the former family head, one Lord Diarmuid Rosemile. How the family rose to its status and how far it may extend beyond these seven generations are details lost to the revolution, as the family's own records on its members and history are surprisingly selective.
As long as the Rosemiles have lived among the ranks of nobility, members of the Weathers family have been there to serve them.
Starting with Diarmuid, often called “Diamond”, those of Rosemile blood have traditionally been named after types of precious stone. The stone a Rosemile is named for becomes their personal stone, determining the colours on their particular flavour of the family crest and often the colours they wear. It is customary for them to be given a particularly large specimen of this stone as a gift at birth and to carry it with them throughout life. Nursemaids tell tales of these stones experiencing life with their bearers and then serving as a final resting place for their souls to enshrine them in eternal beauty, and so a Rosemile will tend to treat their gemstone as an extension of themselves, and with the same degree of importance.
Members of the Rosemile family have traditionally been big on the concept of “nobility” and the importance of the family lineage and bloodline. As such, only those who are born into the family by blood are granted gemstone names. The family is welcoming both to those who marry into it and to those adopted by its members who are unable to produce children or otherwise choose to, but as they are not part of the bloodline these people may not inherit the family estates, and for adoptions the family's records do not go to much effort to track further lineage beyond a single generation. In the case of marriage with members of other noble families, tradition also insists that the spouse take the Rosemile name, regardless of the nature or status of the other family involved. Insistence on this has historically meant less inter-noble marriages than many of the Rosemiles would have liked, but compared to the sanctity of the Rosemile bloodline this is far less important, and there has at least been a reasonable number of minor members of the larger families willing to take a less significant name for a more prominent position within the Rosemile household as part of the endless machinations of the nobility.
Of course there have been members of the Rosemile family who have married into other lines of nobility and taken other names, and doubtless the occasional illegitimate child, but the family's records do not deign to keep track of them in much detail.
The family has relatively small holdings and limited influence within Acryn itself due to its three main estates being dispersed throughout surrounding lands. Originally granted by Lord Diarmuid to his three daughters, Lady Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, the three estates have generally been held by three separate members of the family with each generation. Following the Upheaval, all three have been cut off from the majority of civilisation. Whilst they presumably have enough servants living in and tending to them to remain within pockets of Consensus, some effort is required to find them again amidst the Flux and restore a link to them, and the servants will likely want their pay when that happens.
The largest of the estates lay a few days' travel out to the North of Acryn, and was originally held by Lady Ruby. Some miles out to the South lay the second largest estate which was inherited by Lady Sapphire. The third and smallest estate that was the home of Lady Emerald lay somewhere out to the West, where the land began to become more arid.
The members of the Rosemile family who have held gemstone names are charted here, along with a few choice details recorded about each:
Lord Diarmuid "Diamond" Rosemile | --------------------------------------- / | \ Lady Ruby Lady Sapphire Lady Emerald | | --------- | / \ | Lord Onyx Lady Citrine Lord Malachite | | | | | | Lord Garnet Lord Feldspar | | ---------------------- ------------- / | \ / \ Lady Beryl Lady Topaz Lord Zircon Lord Sunstone Lady Moonstone | | | | | | | | | Lord Jasper Lord Peridot Lady Jade | | | Lady ********
Lord Diamond: The eldest recorded head of the Rosemile family. Slightly eccentric, but by all known counts a good man, big on family.
Lady Ruby: Reported to be a passionate and powerful woman.
Lady Sapphire: Somewhat fiery, known to have a small but well-meaning rivalry with her sister Ruby. Her love for a woman led to a happy and full life, but unfortunately meant her children were adopted and could not continue the bloodline.
Lady Emerald: Apparently somewhat quirky, gave rise to a whole sub-lineage of oddballs.
Lord Onyx: Ruby's son, immensely proud and unfortunately infertile.
Lady Citrine: Kind and motherly. Briefly held the two larger estates at the same time, though nobody seemed to mind as they had not a word to say against her.
Lord Malachite: Rather overbearing on his family and servants. Strict and firm, in a well-meaning sort of way.
Lord Garnet: Wise beyond his years, and may have had some part in the Revolution one way or another. The records don't indicate on which side.
Lord Feldspar: Had some inclinations towards being an evil overlord, and may have had some part in the Revolution one way or another. The records don't indicate on which side.
Lady Beryl: An egotistical and somewhat foolish woman who wasn't especially well-liked.
Lady Topaz: An adventurous woman who enjoyed life. Never bothered to marry.
Lord Zircon: A master with the rapier, undefeated in sparring matches against any of the family or its servants who cared to challenge him.
Lord Sunstone: An eccentric individual thought by some to be insane. Said to have had a sizeable harem, but had no interest in women.
Lady Moonstone: A cynic with a no-nonsense attitude who apparently often disapproved of her brother's antics.
Lord Jasper: A fan of sports and games. Went missing some years before the Upheaval.
Lord Peridot: Rather overprotective of his daughter. Went missing recently after venturing out of the city on unspecified business.
Lady Jade: One of the younger members of her generation. Took after her mother, but with a slightly rebellious edge. Went missing around the time of the Upheaval.
Lady ********: Peridot's sheltered daughter with little experience of the outside world. Does not share her name with commoners. Last known surviving member of the Rosemile gemstone bloodline and thus heir to all three estates.
